PubMed, PubMed Central, Medlineplus. WTF?

Hello blog! Haven’t seen you in a while. Yes, it’s been a wild semester. More on that later, but first we have a webinar coming up! Join us!

Help! I’m an Accidental Government Information Librarian presents … PubMed, PubMed Central, and Medlineplus – What’s the difference? (Lea Leininger, Health Sciences Librarian at the University of North Carolina Greensboro)

The Government Resources Section of the North Carolina Library Association welcomes you to a series of webinars designed to help us all do better reference work by increasing our familiarity with government information resources, and by discovering the best strategies for navigating them.

Do you support health science students? Are you on the hunt for another non-Google tool for health questions from the general public? Maybe you’ve heard that PubMed, PubMed Central and MedlinePlus are great sources for reliable medical information, but you’re not sure which site is best for your needs.  If so, please attend our webinar on December 9 at 12 pm (EST).  A health sciences librarian will provide an overview of PubMed, PubMed Central, and MedlinePlus with some searches and links to additional information.  This session is designed to be a basic introduction for non-medical librarians, but librarians from all settings are welcome to attend.

Ms. Lea Leininger has been the Health Sciences Librarian at the University of North Carolina Greensboro since 2004. She is the liaison librarian for nursing, biology, public health education, nutrition, communication sciences and disorders, nanoscience, and genetic counseling. She has a BA in French, a BA in Humanities, and an MLIS from the University of Texas at Austin.

Technical requirements: We will be using collaborative software called Elluminate. It requires that you be able to download Java onto your computer, but you do not need any special software. You do not need a microphone as a chat system is available in the software, but you do need speakers or headphones.

These days it’s more important than ever to consider what’s worth paying for to support country & statistical research. Recently, some important databases, previously fee–‐ based, are now free. At the same time, some famous, expensive country reports are now available through NC LIVE. We’ll review core sources and cast a “vote” about whether certain subscriptions are still worth the money. This should be useful for reference, collection development, and subject specialists.

Talking about data with Adventures in Library Instruction

I recently had a fun conversation with Jason, Rachel, and Anna at Adventures in Library Instruction about data, data literacy, data reference, and more (well, the book). It was nerve-wracking at first, but the group did a great job keeping things light and fun.

ALI is a wonderful blog (or plog?) with lots of great interviews and resources. You should definitely tune in! I’m currently working my way through the archive. Good times.

chronicles of a workaholic: vacay and #libday7

I like doing Library Day in the Life. I find it helpful to track my time and the project allows a large group of librarians to talk about our profession. I like vacations better and tend to take them at the end of July. If I participate in #summerlibday, it is usually for one post.

So, here is my one post.

Even though I am at home, vacation has ended it seems. This morning I worked on a chapter about professional involvement for an edited volume on kick-starting your library career. I should have written that one of the perils of professional involvement is having to write a chapter during your vacation (because you are so busy during regular work times that you can’t get it written).

I helped a colleague on chat with a data question and I have another one waiting me in my email inbox. I have been trying to avoid answering (or looking at email) as much as possible during vacations, but sometimes I am a weak, weak woman.

Next up is a webinar for the Help! I am an Accidental Government Information Librarian series for which I do tech support. I’m excited about the topic, Resources for Guard and Reserves Soldiers. I would have rescheduled for a different week, but schedules are tight and we had promoted it. The only frustration is that the university Blackboard administrators went ahead and changed our version of Elluminate to Blackboard Collaborate. I’m sitting here staring at an all new system. Yikes, spikes. (Post-session note: We had some tech difficulties starting out, but I learned a bunch about the structure of the guard and reserves as well as resources. Helpful stuff for any public services person.) If you are interested in the topic or the series, you can find the presentations and recordings on the NCLA Government Resources Section website.

Tomorrow I have a Skype meeting with a colleague from IASSIST, the data professional’s organization. We are the co-chairs of the Education Committee and need to plan for the year.

Friday I have another Skype meeting with the wonderful people at Adventures in Library Instruction. We are going to talk data and data literacy. If you haven’t come across this blog, I encourage you to check it out. They are podcasting on a variety of topics relevant to library instruction. The most recent is on Jason Puckett’s book about Zotero. I heard the podcast right before co-teaching a session on Zotero, and it helped me think through the structure of the session.

Monday I am meeting with a colleague in the Warren Ashby Residential College about library support for the college in the next year. This is the continuation of the in-house librarian program I have been doing for a year now.

Tuesday is ShareAcademy!! Woohoo! Can’t wait. Last year I didn’t present, but had loads of fun. This year Jenny Dale, Amy Harris and I are presenting … on presentations!

Wednesday I will be back at work for the day to answer email and prepare for Thursday’s presentation for BLINC on the new American FactFinder.

I also need to spend the next week and a half working on my fall class. I am teaching a class called the International System as an adjunct faculty for the Political Science department. The class is an introductory, core course on international relations theory. I love teaching IR theory at this level because you don’t get weighed down in the theoretical debates. This class is also necessarily historical since so much of IR theory developed in response to events, in response to the question “why?”.  Events like the Arab spring, the assassination of Osama bin Laden, and the global economic crisis are also good discussion starters and students are better able to see how international relations can be relevant to them. I last taught this class during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and the level of interest in the material definitely increased once the bombing started. Sad fact, but true. Because this is a unique instruction project for me, I plan to blog more reflectively and more often once the class starts.

And then the next Monday, August 8, I am back from vacation!

Yes, I tend to be too involved in my work. And yes, I did get a real vacation earlier this week. I am better about keeping time for myself, for my family and friends, and for de-stressing. The reality for me, though, is that librarianship is a career and not just a job. I love what I do in my day in the life of a librarian.

this post is about food…and libraries…but mostly food

Vegan Cowboy Cookies

Don’t know if they are as good as the ones I made on Tuesday for a vegan friend’s birthday, but they are up there. I’ve been baking a lot lately. I love to bake for one. I especially like baking vegan goodies because people always seem so skeptical and then are always, always so amazed at how good they taste. The reality is baking is just chemistry with edible components. If you have the right ingredients to create certain chemical reactions, then you will end up with a cookie every time. That’s why the food industry can make good-tasting creations without using real food. In vegan baking (or cooking) you start with (usually) real food and then have an added bonus of cruelty-free. I’m not vegan and I have fallen from my vegetarian pedestal many times, but honestly vegan baking is just a win-win.

I also tend to bake when I’m stressed about something and this is where the library comes in. UNCG’s Chancellor announced a 15% budget cut yesterday. Terrible news for the library, the university, and for NC’s educational system. I’m not denying we could trim some fat, but we have been trimming like crazy since I became a librarian. We are also living through a few big changes in our library; some I think will be positive and others could have long term costs. We will work through the future, but no one can deny that change is stressful.

The thing I worry about for libraries, especially academic libraries, is that we tend to respond to our perceived failings and so rarely celebrate our actual successes. The reality of declining questions at the reference desk is a fact at UNCG.  But focusing on the way things used to be ignores the soaring numbers of consultations, emails, and chats that our reference librarians are receiving. And no one seems to be examine why that is happening. Why, if reference is dead, do we still see a large number of people coming to ask for our assistance on their research? What is it we are doing right?

Maybe my library happens to be staffed by outrageously smart, personable and outgoing people who just bring in the crowds. I mean it is really, but something else is going on here. We’ve had instruction class numbers through the roof. The business librarian gets a crazy number of contacts from faculty and students (around 500 a year I think). And last year I hit my high of over 250. What are we doing right? What are the ingredients that make us still be part of the research process?

These are ongoing questions for me and I haven’t figured them out obviously. Maybe someday I should do a study. If you have ideas, leave them here. I’d love to hear them.

In the meantime, back to some vegan baking.

WUAG 103.1 fm: Preserving its past, anticipating its future

Today is a sad day for WUAG 103.1 fm, UNCG’s campus radio station. The full-time, permanent General Manager, Jack Bonney, will be leaving us. His position has been eliminated because of the budget cuts coming from the NC General Assembly. Jack was the first full-time General Manager when he started in February 2003 and he has done an incredible amount of work to make WUAG an amazing station. From bringing in Joanna Newsom to starting a record fair to moving the entire station into a new building, Jack has worked tirelessly to make WUAG one of the best college radio stations in the nation. As someone who attended UNCG as an undergraduate in the 1990s, I’ve seen the station go from being a clique of indie kids to a powerhouse of all-inclusive college radio. UNCG will be missing a key person as we go into the next academic year. It is an absolute shame.

In addition to being a strong leader for the station, Jack has also been committed to the preservation of its history. He has tried to give copies of the station’s CD compilations and magazines to our archives every year. Because of that archival material a colleague, David Gwynn, and I put in a proposal to our Digital Projects Task Force to digitize the entire run of the station’s print magazines. Both David and I have worked for the station–he as a volunteer General Manager and myself as a student Program Director–so this project meant a lot to us. And the proposal was accepted!

Dead City Radios from the 2000s

When it is digitized we will share more information about the DCRs, but basically this is the station’s zine. It started in the 1980s as In Print  and became Dead City Radio sometime in the 1990s. The title comes from a William S. Burroughs’ cd title, but we also have a station liner with WSB saying, “This Dead City Radio on WUAG Greensboro, North Carolina.” Considering both the city’s nickname, “Gate City,” and its historical, let’s say, sleepiness, it is a perfect title for WUAG’s publication.

I hope in addition to digitizing the zine we may be able to create a web presence of some sort (although I haven’t talked to David about this yet) where former and current DJs can share their experiences and memories of creating this amazing publication. I see this as a very small way to honor the work of Jack Bonney and his efforts to make WUAG the station it is today.

A supposedly fun thing I’ll never do again … #ala11

This wonderful David Foster Wallace title does not refer to my experience with the American Library Association’s Annual Conference. I’ve been to four conferences now and each time I’ve had a better experience than the last. Admittedly, I’ve not quite found my home in the organization yet. My library job has many facets (data, instruction, government info, etc); therefore, it is hard to justify concentrating on only one. I also love meeting and connecting people to each other. I probably won’t ever stick to one division (although my wallet may not like it), but it means that I will have a harder time finding my “fit”.

I will have some conference summaries soon, but my most memorable experience this year was with the Emerging Leaders Interest Group’s EL Summit headed up by the fabulous Jaime Hammond. Lisa Carlucci started off the session with an inspiring talk on Cadillac Leadership and a few of us did lightning rounds on topics related to EL-ness, such as professional development and getting onto ALA Council. I hope Lisa will post her talk somewhere because I couldn’t take notes at the time. Maybe someone in the room was taking good notes! While the EL program has room for improvement, it has been tremendously valuable both for the ‘leadership’ aspects and for new friendships, but also because I am able to learn from people I would never meet within my job-related divisions (like GODORT). Learning about life in the public library from new librarians helps to put some of the issues within ALA and the profession into much greater perspective. When I applied for EL, I listed this as one of the reasons I wanted to join and I haven’t been disappointed.

So, what is my supposedly fun thing I’ll never do again, if ALA isn’t it? When I arrived home yesterday I found a package. Inside were copies of my book, Numeric Data Services and Sources for the General Reference Librarian

I knew that writing a book would not be a fun project. Nevertheless, I am glad Katharin and I wrote it because it fills a serious gap in the market. At a RUSA data discussion session on Sunday, Michelle Hudson, the data librarian at Yale University said, “Hopefully all librarians will be data librarians someday.” The idea is that every reference/instruction librarian should feel comfortable using numeric data sources because they are information too, just like the written word. We will still rely on specialists for certain questions, but all librarians will have basic familiarity with the WIDE range of sources out there. Helping all librarians become data librarians is the goal of this book!

So, why would I think twice about writing a book? First, it takes so much of your head space. I understand now why people take writing sabbaticals. I should have thought more strategically about this when I agreed to the project and would encourage any librarian who wants to write a book to think seriously about the amount of time you have to commit to it. Unless your library can give you time away from regular duties to concentrate on writing, you are going to be struggling to use your free time. Unfortunately for most of us our time is not structured for serious writing projects.

Second, the book as a format is a bit of a letdown. There are many great tips in this book for incorporating data into instruction and reference, but I already want to update the entire thing! I’ve learned so much and so much has changed since February 2010 when I sent my final proofs to the publisher that I’m already on a second edition in my head. I’ve thought about creating a wiki or a blog for the book, of course, and I’ve been trying to figure out the best forum. I would just like the book to be more of a social experience. I am not the final word on data reference and instruction, so how do I get other people’s voices and ideas heard? How do  we make the print book an ongoing organism and not stuck in a  particular moment in time? Once I’ve found the ability to do that, then may be it won’t be as much of a downer.

I am excited about the book arriving. It will have a positive impact for people who are new to numeric data. It has a place in libraryland! I just would need my arm seriously twisted to take on a project like that ever again :)

On a final note, I received another package in the mail yesterday. It is a birthday gift from my husband and I just had to share. Those of you who know me well will know why.
